Team-managed and company-managed spaces

Sumline works the same in every kind of Jira space: team-managed and company-managed software spaces, business spaces and Jira Service Management spaces. The one thing that differs between them is where story points are kept, and Sumline handles that for you.

Which story-points field

Team-managed and company-managed spaces keep story points in different fields:

  • Team-managed spaces use “Story point estimate”, Jira’s own field, which Sumline finds by its type.
  • Company-managed spaces use “Story Points”, the number field Jira Software adds for them.

Sumline picks the field per space, so an epic in one kind of space whose stories live in the other still adds up correctly, and the admin settings never ask you to name a field. A site without a “Story Points” field uses “Story point estimate” everywhere.

If your Story Points field was renamed

In company-managed spaces, “Story Points” is a plain number field, like any other number field on your site, so Sumline recognises it by its name: any name with “story point” in it, in any letter case. A site that shows Jira in another language still works, because Sumline reads the field’s original English name. If an admin renamed the field to something else, such as “Effort”, Sumline cannot tell it apart from your other number fields, and story points show “—” in company-managed spaces. Renaming it back, or to a name with “story point” in it, fixes that; or contact our support site at https://sumline.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/1 or by email at [email protected].

When an issue has a value in both

If an issue carries story points in the other kind of space’s field as well, Sumline uses the one that belongs to its space and names the issue in the Sumline panel. It never adds the two together.

Service management spaces

Epics, requests, tasks and subtasks in a Jira Service Management space roll up the same way: original estimate, time spent and remaining estimate from the requests and their subtasks, done by status category, both percentages. The Sumline tab sits in the space’s left sidebar. A service desk has no sprints, so the Sprint filter is greyed out, and story points show “—” unless the space’s screens carry a story-points field.

Initiatives

Rolling up to initiatives needs Jira Premium: initiatives are the hierarchy level above epic, and Premium is what adds it. Where your site has that level, Sumline rolls epics up into initiatives and the tables can show initiative rows. Without it Sumline rolls up from subtask to epic, and everything else works the same on Jira Free and Standard.
